Winston Sito Chmielinski

“The ‘sea’ is the only consistent thing in my life,”
says Winston Sito Chmielinski, a first-generation Chinese-American artist who seems to have found his grounding among waves. It’s a play on sounds, referencing the meaning and pronunciation of his Cantonese name (司徒弘濤), yet also a nod to navigating between distant shores: be they cultural, psychological, or geographic.

Winston brings a confluence of convergent and divergent practices into his work, maintaining that many among his generation have been born in polarity to become bridge-makers—in his words, “To test the tensile strength of up-close and personal diversity.”

How does an upbringing partitioned among online gaming, Chinese mystical practices, and Catholic school, in parallel with twenty years of classical violin training, performance studies and a philosophy degree, come together in a painting? “[Painting] is the only approach I’ve found that holds space for our complexity, at a pace where we can begin unravelling the limitations of narratives, motives, and conditioning.”

Winston also emphasizes material integrity, not just as a counterbalance to convenience, but also as a gesture of intersectional peace. “The minerals I use are hundreds of millions of years old… Why would I force them into bondage with plastic?” Through researching traditional painting and construction methods, Winston has developed unique formulations out of tree resins and grain pastes to suspend gemstone and mineral pigments upon naturally archival supports.

The effect is mesmerizing. The organic variations in mineral particles create a field of diffracted light, which reads like a glitch in the visual cortex. Winston’s paintings possess the unrepeating novelty of a sunrise. In a world where all colors, shapes, and sequences can be summoned at the click of a button, Winston opens windows out onto another direction, one of timelessness, clarity, and alignment.
